In Northwestern Indiana, transit projects will outnumber road projects for the firs time in history. Funding for roads, however, still outpaces transit projects.
The 2012-2015 transportation plan of the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission includes 193 local transit projects, 161 local projects and 93 Indiana Department of Transportation highway projects.
"While there are a greater number of transit projects, more funds are going to local and INDOT highway projects. Transit projects will receive about $174 million in funding while INDOT highway projects will receive $230 million and local projects will receive about $244 million.
Neither NIRPC transportation projects manager Gary Evers nor Strains could pinpoint the cause of the increased number of transit projects, but both emphasized the increase is good news."
