As reporter Carrie Wells writes, "Who knew chickens could create so much controversy?" The Sarasota Planning Board is considering legalizing backyard chickens, and residents on both sides are up in arms.
The amendment to the city's zoning code would allow up to four chickens per backyard, and require they be kept in an enclosed coop. That's just fine with the Sarasotans behind CLUCK (Citizens Lobbying for Urban Chicken Keeping):
"Cluck, which has been active for a year and a half and has about 300 supporters, says chickens would make Sarasota more attractive for a younger, hipper crowd. Children who think their food grows at the supermarket can see where it really comes from."
The objectors worry about the smell and how the city will pay for enforcement.
