"Most Manhattan neighborhoods have reputations that cling even as change overtakes them. The meatpacking district, with its growing number of expensive restaurants and boutiques, is still commonly thought of as the underbelly of Greenwich Village. And if a group of preservation-minded people has its way, that is exactly how it will stay."
