LA's Mega-Billboard Plan: Visual Blight?

What started out as a welcome effort to thin out the city's 7,000 billboards may become visual blight in Los Angeles.

There is an ordinance that requires a 600 foot setback for billboards along the freeway. A city council committee may reduce that to 200 feet. In exchange, sign companies would agree to remove 20 existing signs for every freeway mega-sign it puts up. Opponents say this is not a good trade-off, since many of the small illegal signs could be the trade-in. And what of the beautiful freeway views of the hills, snow-capped mountains and LA vistas? Possibly a thing of the past.
