The results of the American Planning Association poll show broad public support for a federal Smart Growth Agenda.
In a national survey conducted by the American PlanningAssociation (APA) and the AmericanInstitute of Certified Planners (AICP), Americans expressed the desirefor better communities and stronger local and federal laws to ensurequality of life in their area. Fifty-three percent of Americans favornew laws to manage growth at a local level, and 54% say planners shouldact decisively to curb urban sprawl. Adequate schools and facilitiesranked the highest among voters as issues that planners should address,in addition to health care, family support services, and open space.Creating transportation alternatives and revitalizing inner cityneighborhoods were also important. Half of the 1,000 voters interviewedby telephone live in smaller cities and suburban areas.
