California universities are seeking creative solutions to deal with a housing crunch. UC Santa Cruz has taken a decidedly innovative approach.
"Leasing motel space is a creative -- some might say desperate -- gambit against soaring Silicon Valley rents. The 2-year-old UCSC Inn expands on a successful university-innkeeper partnership that has grown to 13 local motels renting 166 rooms to students when summer tourists vanish. The Holiday Inn and many motel rentals are less expensive than campus housing, and some include perks to delight any dorm rat -- pools and fitness centers, weekly maid service and free continental breakfast. "
