"Real men don't take public transit. Or so one might intuit from the aura of goo-goo civic virtue with which transit advocates often adorn the service. The save-the-planet sensibility suggests (quite falsely, as it happens) that the typical rider is an NPR-listening, Birkenstock-wearing, tofu-eating do-gooder who uses his vintage Volvo only for hauling empty organic-yogurt containers to the recycling center."
