The overhaul aims to reduce traffic deaths and make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers through lower speed limits, new safety infrastructure and more.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released an overhaul of NYC’s Vision Zero project, titled "Vision Zero Reimagined” on Sept. 15. The plan includes 100 policy goals, including 15 mph speed limits near hundreds of additional schools and new safety infrastructure at 1,000 intersections annually, and aims to reduce traffic deaths and make NYC’s streets safer.
“The proposal builds on the city's Vision Zero program, launched in 2014, which city officials say helped drive traffic fatalities to historic lows through a combination of street redesigns, public education campaigns and traffic enforcement efforts,” Eyewitness News reports.
The plan calls for speed-capping devices for drivers consistently caught speeding in school zones and funding to help low-income residents afford public transit and Citi Bike costs. City agencies can directly implement some initiatives, others will require approval from state lawmakers.
