The company says its vehicles are trained to treat non-functional traffic lights as four-way stops, but videos show Waymos stopped on city streets during a major outage on Saturday.
A power outage caused mass confusion for Waymo cars in San Francisco on Saturday night, when a traffic light outage led to dozens of autonomous vehicles stalled at intersections, some with passengers inside.
According to an article from ABC 7 and the Associated Press, at its peak, the power outage affected around a third of PG&E’s customers in the city. On Saturday night, Waymo paused its service in the city, resuming it Sunday evening. In a statement, the company said, “We are focused on rapidly integrating the lessons learned from this event, and are committed to earning and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve every day.”
