The nation’s first autonomous public transit shuttle launched in Jacksonville, Florida, with a fleet of 14 customized electric vehicles that serve 12 designated stations over a 3.5-mile downtown route.
As Dan Zukowski explains in Smart Cities Dive, the service will be free until the end of September. “The service is the first phase of a 10-mile autonomous urban circulator to be completed over the next 10 years.” The fleet is operated by Beep for the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA).
Similar autonomous shuttles operate in more controlled environments such as college campuses, but have not been deployed on U.S. roads.
