Permeable Crosswalks for Pedestrian Safety

Permeable crosswalks absorb water and snowmelt, while decreasing ice on the road.

Pedestrian deaths are up in Missouri, as they are in other cities around the country. In an effort to mitigate some of the danger of the roads, and absorb rainwater and snowmelt, Raymore, Missouri installed a brick crosswalk at a busy intersection.

"Here is how it will work: the water will filter between the spaces of the bricks. Therefore, ice won't form on the roadway, which can make both walking and driving dangerous," Jordan Betts writes for KHSB NBC. After the initial success of this crosswalk, the city is moving forward with plans to install ten more.
