Continuing a string of high-profile infrastructure announcements, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a deal to shut down the Indian Point Nuclear Plant, located less than 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Patrick McGeehan reports that the days of the Indian Point Nuclear Plant in New York are numbered. Governor Andrew Cuomo "announced on Monday that the state had reached an agreement with the plant’s operator, Entergy, to shut it down by April 2021," according to McGeehan.
The announcement came in one of the six State of State addresses Gov. Cuomo is giving around the state this week.
McGeehan quotes Robert Freudenberg, the director of energy and environmental programs for the Regional Plan Association, in the article. Freudenberg expresses concern over the state's lack of renewable energy sources to make up for the lost capacity. "We feel that now the most urgent priority is that the state take all the steps necessary to ramp up the state’s renewable energy supply," says Freudenberg.
New Orleans-based Entergy, meanwhile, "has been withdrawing from nuclear power generation in the North and focusing on its regulated utility business in the South," according to McGeehan.
