According to the 2000 Census, most of the U.S. prospered in the 1990s with urban Midwesterners seeing large income gains.
"The latest batch of data from the 2000 Census, released yesterday, shows that the nation's median household income grew by 7.6 percent after inflation. Median home values increased by 20 percent, and the number of families living below the federal poverty line dropped by 8 percent.Midwesterners living in metropolitan areas saw...the biggest increase for any region in the country. Likewise, poverty in the Midwest metro areas declined by almost 1.5 percent - the best performance in the nation."
