Gil Penalosa was in the Twin Cities recently as part of the annual Placemaking Residency, convened by the Saint Paul Riverfront Corp. At the end of his stay, he prescribed 14 action points for Saint Paul.
Jay Walljasper reports on the recent visit by Gil Penalosa—former parks commissioner in Bogotá, Colombia and current leader of the 8-80 Cities program—to the Twin Cities. At the end of the visit, Penalosa provided 14 steps that St. Paul should take to become a world-class city, or, as Walljasper puts it, "join the ranks of Paris, Vancouver and Melbourne, Australia, as one of the world's top cities."
Among Penalosa's recommendations:
11. Make biking and walking utterly normal
9. Remember that planning for transportation and land use are the same thing
4. Keep Baby Boomers here
