Tutorial On Building Affordable Housing

This article follows a nonprofit developer through the arduous process of building an affordable housing project.

In San Diego County as well as in other regions, the demand for affordable housing far outweighs the supply, in part due to the difficulty of financing new development. The article describes the process of purchasing land, developing local government support, searching for grants, applying for tax credits and securing loans for affordable housing. Because many cities have ordinances requiring developers to build some affordable housing with every new project, the process is becoming more common and increasingly important.
