Sensing the potential for the movement to gain a toehold through land use regulations, leaders of New York City's Occupy movement have called on city planning officials to create an official 'Occupy' zoning designation.
The Occupy movement is hoping the zoning designation will help it gather more official credibility.
"We've occupied places we weren't supposed to, and that just seemed to make the city mad. If they simply created an official Occupy zone, we could occupy that. Problem solved," one of the movement's organizers told reporters outside City Hall.
The movement is hoping that the city will agree to create the new designation, giving an official area for occupation.
However, zoning officials say a citywide program that encourages mixed-use zoning could complicate matters.
