E-ZPass, New Jersey's electronic toll system is being called an "unmitigated disaster." Others say the barely one year old system's problems are not unique and are caused by its popularity.

"[As] the state's E-ZPass nears its first anniversary of full operation, others say its troubles are partly a result of the program's popularity ? 1.4 million tags are already in circulation ? and the tendency for any auto-related issues in New Jersey to balloon into titanic dustups. Indeed, a review of experiences elsewhere in the country indicate that the troubles are hardly unique, especially in places where electronic tolling systems were added to older highways."
