The International Economic Development Council's 2011 Leadership Summit, will kick off with the "San Diego Story" opening session showcasing the dramatic transformation of San Diego's economy with replicable strategies for building a more diversified economy in communities of all sizes.
The San Diego region was once almost exclusively reliant on a military and defense economy. Today, more than 16 main traded clusters play an important role in the economic growth of the region and include high technology sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, communications, software, environmental technology and electronics.
San Diego's success was not over night, and sustained community vision and leadership was an important ingredient to emergence and recognition of region as center for high technology industries. Collaboration with research and higher education institutions was equally important. Beginning in the 1960's with the establishment of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the founding of the University of California San Diego to today, the process of diversification has been enduring and incremental.
San Diego's work is not done. As high technology workers earn 60% more in wages than the region's average, San Diego sees today as just the starting point for raising the region's standard of living.
Learn how San Diego's planning, collaboration and leadership resulted in such a significant transformation. Walk away with a greater understanding of the secrets to their success, and learn how to build resiliency for your community by diversifying your economy and unlocking your region's future.
