NYU Wagner Master of Urban Planning Program
Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service
Housed within a school of public service, rather than a school of architecture, the Master of Urban Planning program brings students into direct contact with the critical urban challenges of our time. Today's urban planners must balance development, community needs and social justice, provision of critical public services, sustainability and security. In the broader contexts of policy, management and finance, NYU Wagner planning students develop the critical thinking they need to succeed in urban design, land use, economic and community development, housing and environmental and infrastructure planning. NYU Wagner is at the forefront of these vital issues and debates, and presents myriad opportunities to obtain and practice the skills needed to confront these new challenges.
There are three areas of emphasis within Wagner's MUP program: economic development and housing policy; environment, transportation and infrastructure planning; and international development planning.
The economic development and housing policy cluster provides students with the frameworks necessary to understand and analyze current planning and policy issues, economic theory and the underlying social and political underpinnings of the stakeholders. It prepares students for careers in housing, community development and economic development.
The environment, infrastructure and transportation cluster prepares students to design and deliver public infrastructure services and safeguard environmental conditions for public health and welfare.
The international planning specialization prepares planners to work with governments, community-based organizations and international development agencies that focus on sub-national development in developing countries.
Courses are taught by full-time faculty and leading experts in land use regulation, housing, international development and transportation. The graduates of Wagner's Urban Planning program work in a broad array of settings, including community development organizations, consulting firms, public agencies and as staff to elected officials.
Wagner's flexible approach to graduate study allows MUP students to enroll full time or part time, as their work life necessitates. Wagner students can also enroll in courses at NYU's Real Estate Institute, the Stern School of Business and the NYU Law School.
