While Boston has long been an nternational hub for university life, ich with labs and libraries and cademia's juiciest cocktail parties, the city is increasingly a tough sell to professors due to high housing costs.

Dennis Trout's news last year stunned his colleagues at Tufts University: He was trading in the intellectual vibrancy he loved in Boston for a teaching job at the University of Missouri-Columbia. But his reason didn't surprise anyone: a 2,500-square-foot, four-bedroom house on a quiet suburban street. "Housing here is a third of the cost of Boston," said Trout, speaking from his office in the Missouri classics department, a five-minute bike ride from a $152,000 home. "The difference makes it possible to have a nice house and a nice lifestyle - something that's a real challenge to find in Boston."
