Columnist Barbara Wilson argues that effective solutions to traffic congestions can only be achieved by addressing the real causes of congestion.
"If we hope to create long-term traffic solutions, we need to look at the real causes of traffic congestion. It's that dirty word 'sprawl.' Only when we begin to address the policies that contribute to sprawl will we reduce the amount of time we spend sitting in traffic. To achieve long-term success, we need to build compact, thriving, healthy communities with amenities that are accessible by walking, bicycling and public transit in addition to cars. We must begin to integrate community and land-use planning into transportation decisions."
