President Bush's budget provisions raise concerns for rural housing.
Elimination of an entire rural housing program, coupled with potentialfunding reductions for others, has attracted the attention of ruralhousingsupporters who are reviewing the Bush administration's budget. TheHousingAssistance Council is concerned about "A Blueprint for New Beginnings,"which suggests that the Rural Housing and Economic Development programinthe Department of Housing and Urban Development be eliminated because itduplicates other programs. The budget blueprint also promises a reviewofthe efficiency of U.S. Department of Agriculture's field officestructure, which includes thousands of county level offices. In a summary of ruralhousing issues and recommendations released earlier this month, theHousingAssistance Council advises that "U.S. housing policy should prioritizeserving those people who are most in need, including poor ruralhouseholds."
