Green Roofs Slow To Take Root

Roof gardens have been used in Europe for 25 years and can make a building more energy-efficient. Are they up to tackling the urban water runoff and urban heat island problems in U.S. cities?

"The problem of urban water runoff has worsened as buildings, parking lots, streets and sidewalks have replaced open space...green roofs can provide insulation, absorb storm water and outlast conventional roofs while making a building more energy-efficient. Besides storm water, green roofs may help reduce the so-called urban heat island effect, which develops when dark rooftops and pavements absorb the sun's heat and radiate it."
