Nine states are conducting a feasibility study to find out if global positioning technology (GPS) can be an alternative to the gas tax by tracking each car and charging drivers based on where and how many miles they drive.
"Imagine a world with no gas taxes. Instead of shelling out 38 cents a gallon in taxes at the pump, an onboard computer records your travel and you are charged for where and how many miles you drive." Critics have expressed privacy concers - "It's a truly awful idea.I don't see an overwhelming public need for government to know where we drive."
