The Feds named it "Special Project No. 1." but residents called it "Greenbelt." It was the first experiment of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "garden city" movement. "[T]e city of 23,000 also symbolizes the things lost, tangible and intangible - stores within walking distance, small "pocket parks" and, perhaps, neighborliness itself - as bigger homes on larger lots more distant from central cities and business strips became the norm in post-war suburbia."
