The Italian capital of style is considering following in London's footsteps and charging drivers for bring vehicles into the city's core.
In the fight against pollution and traffic congestion, the Mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti, is preparing to propose the equivalent of a $2.50 congestion surcharge on vehicles entering the city. Influenced by London's pricing policy, Moratti will propose the scheme in January 2007.
Opponents worry that a surcharge on motorists could negatively affect Milan's economy, while proponents envision improving public transit and implementing other environmental and transportation programs.
"The city has also begun experimenting with a new type of asphalt that absorbs airborne pollutants."
