Planetizen Op-Ed Guidelines

Content: Op-Eds should be original, unpublished works which address a controversial topic and be relevant to a national or international planning and development audience. For example, recent topics have included Smart Growth vs. Sprawl, Transit Oriented Development, disaster planning, New Urbanism, and Kelo v. New London. Planetizen welcomes coverage of these and many other issues related to planning and development.

Length: We request that Op-Eds range between 600 and 1,000 words, although this count is flexible.

Photos/Graphics: We typically include a photograph of the author(s) of the article, and will require your photograph at the time you submit your article. You may submit your photograph in an electronic form (preferred), or mail us a photo, which we will scan and return to you. You are welcome to submit suitable graphics for inclusion in the article as well.

Editing: We reserve the right to edit your submission for content and grammar, although this is a collaborative process, and all edits are communicated with the author(s) of the Op-Ed.

First Rights: We do not run Op-Eds that have previously appeared in other publications, or that will appear in another publication prior to publication on Planetizen. If your Op-Ed has previously been published, let us know, and we may include a summary and link to it in the daily newswire. After publication of your original Op-Ed on Planetizen, future publication of the same piece must include first publication credit to Planetizen. We require that all Op-Ed authors complete and sign a publication agreement prior to publication on Planetizen.

Due Date: The editor with whom you are corresponding will let you know the deadline for submission of your Op-Ed. This is usually one to two weeks from the date of initial correspondence.
