Citing what it called misinformation in the community, the San Francisco Unified School District has dropped plans for a partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which would have guaranteed loans and offered mortgage insurance for their project. Community residents feared that school officials were pulling a fast one, that the project would be a typical urban public housing complex. However, officials still believe the program can be a national model for districts in expensive urban areas.
