The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is extending two discount programs for its commuter rail services and adding new discounted fares for buses and subways to encourage people to continue riding transit, reports Penny Kmitt in CBS News.

The agency will keep monthly commuter rail passes at 50% of regular prices through November, and monthly pass holders can bring a companion for a $1 fare. MBTA will also begin offering free fares to residents over 75 who no longer drive, make express bus fare the same as regular fare and create a two-hour unlimited transfer window.

According to Kmitt, "MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said June had the highest ridership since before the pandemic. During that time, the T was operating on extended hours with the World Cup in town."
