The Louisiana capital wants to entice developers to its riverfront district.
A new plan approved by the East Baton Rouge Planning Commission aims to draw development to the Mississippi River waterfront with ambitious goals for "a youth sports and entertainment complex, a waterside promenade and housing," writes Ianne Salvosa in The Advocate.
The plan, led by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, sets a goal of tripling the downtown population and adding a tax base that could bring in $37 million in sales and property taxes annually.
Some local property owners oppose the rezoning of the area for recreational use. "BRAF Vice President of Civic Leadership Eric Dexter said planners will work with downtown property owners throughout the implementation of the plan, in response to Commissioner Jody Boyd asking if there is an alternative plan for the location of the proposed youth complex."
