Somoa, a former mill town 300 miles north of San Francisco, has offered itself for sale as an opportunity for historic preservation or affordable housing.

Somoa is one of the West's last company towns, and the owner, Seattle-based Simpson Timber Co., is offering the bayfront town for as little as $1.75 million. The town is being pitched as a great opportunity for historic preservation or affordable housing. Local economic development officials would rather see the town and an adjacent 100-acre industrial park be used to attract new high-tech firms that would replace the jobs the town has lost.
