The Bixi system introduced a winter pilot project last year, leading to a rise in winter cycling.

Montreal’s Bixi bike share system broke it’s ridership record this year, logging over 13 million rides in 2024, according to a report in The Gazette.
The system saw a 15 percent year-over-year growth in ridership in part thanks to its expansion into areas outside Montreal. “Bixi credited its winter cycling initiative, launched last year with support from Loto-Québec, for bolstering year-round usage. Nearly 1 million rides were made during the winter pilot project, with 65 per cent of users trying cold-weather cycling for the first time.”
Bixi has become “a cornerstone of sustainable mobility,” said Marianne Giguère, Montreal’s associate councillor for mobility. The system also opened a maintenance hub that can speed up bike repairs and offer services to users.
