"The rest of the country may want to dump on Amtrak for one thing thing or another, but we owe it to them to speak up because they're doing it right here.The harsh reality is that if we want passenger rail service in this country, we have to pay for it at every level. Out of pocket, and out of the Treasury. A subsidy of a couple billion dollars a year is all it would take, 10 percent of what we give away to the airlines. Why do we have such a hypocritical view of passenger railroads? We subsidize air travel willingly, but not rail travel."
