After a local musician was hit with $1,000 in bike-related fines, advocates were able to achieve some changes in how the city regulates bike use.
"Bike registration in New Orleans is no longer mandatory," reports Chelsea Brasted.
The New Orleans City Council this week approved an ordinance that takes the $175 violation for lacking bike registration off the books.
The registration was intended to facilitate the return of stolen or lost property, but concerns about abuse of fines related to bikes grew until the violation was removed.
A voluntary program will still be in place.
