The state’s FY26 budget includes increased investment in transit security, mental health services, and fare evasion enforcement.

New York’s 2026 state budget includes “major investments” that focus on safety on the New York City subway system. “The budget includes major investments to increase the presence of law enforcement, make crucial safety upgrades in protective barriers and LED lighting and continue cracking down on fare evasion,” according to an article in Mass Transit.
Crime levels on the MTA subway system were already trending down, with crime down 11 percent this year since 2024. But earlier this year, the Trump administration threatened to withdraw federal funding from transit systems including New York’s, citing security concerns.
The budget includes approval of the $68.4 billion 2025-2029 Capital Plan, $77 million for an increased NYPD presence, and investments in mental health services.
