The Rail Vehicle Replacement Program supports new equipment purchases for subway, commuter rail, and light rail systems.
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced awards of over $700 million to six projects nationwide, representing “first-time funding from the new Rail Vehicle Replacement Program, which was created to improve safety, service, and the customer experience on subways, commuter rail, and light rail systems.”
The program is allocated a total of $1.5 billion in new funding through 2026 and is aimed at “replac[ing] aging passenger railcars, improving reliability, safety, and accessibility on the nation's rail transit systems.” Older train cars can slow service and lack amenities like digital signage and accessibility features.
The six projects are in Sacramento, South Florida, Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Utah.
