With the ambition of becoming "the Amazon of healthcare," the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has announced a $2 billion expansion plan that includes building three major new hospitals in Pittsburgh.
The hospitals will be built on existing medical campuses: UPMC Mercy, UPMC Shadyside, and UPMC Presbyterian in the heart of the Oakland Innovation District. UPMC is partnering with Microsoft to bring state-of-the-art medical technologies to the hospitals, which will specialize in cancer, organ transplants, and heart and vision care. Designs for the new facilities will be chosen through an international competition.
