Large corporations providing on-site cafeterias are considered a threat to local restaurant business.

"Two city legislators...are expected to announce legislation banning on-site workplace cafeterias in an effort to promote and support local restaurants," according to an article by Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez.
"The measure, proposed by Supervisor Ahsha Safai and co-sponsored by Supervisor Aaron Peskin, would adjust zoning laws to ban workplace cafeterias moving forward, but would not be retroactive," adds Fitzgerald Rodriguez.
The law would react to concerns about the viability of local restaurants located near tech companies like Twitter and Airbnb, which provide dining options inside their buildings. Peskin is quoted in the article saying the law fights the "Amazon effect" on retail and restaurants. San Francisco wouldn’t be the first city in the region to implement an on-site cafeteria prohibition, nearby Mountain View, Located in the Silicon Valley and home of Google parent company Alphabet, also has a similar law.
