With PennDOT cooperation, high school students install miles of living snow fence along I-79 to improve safety, establish wildlife habitat, and beautify the countryside.
Jason Drake, a junior-senior high school biology teacher, took 105 biology students on a field trip this week. Students spent a sunny day outdoors, digging holes and planting conifers and hardwoods along the southbound lane of Interstate 79 as they installed "living snow fences" along a highway with a local reputation for treacherous winter driving. The joint venture included personnel from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Bureau of Forestry, Crawford County Conservation District and French Creek Project.
