Following what is an increasing trend in the Los Angeles area, residents of "South Central" Los Angeles want a new name for their community to help clense the area of its stigma of crime, poverty and racial problems.
"Like West Hills, North Hills and Valley Glen, South Central Los Angeles wants to join the growing list of communities that hope image and property values will improve with a name change. It's new name: South Los Angeles. Name changes in the Los Angeles are not new. Most recently, the western portion of Van Nuys voted to rename itself Lake Balboa. Before that were successful drives to rename portions of Canoga Park as West Hills, Sepulveda as North Hills, and North Hollywood as Valley Village, among others." The proposed name change for the area has the support of residents and local city councilmembers who say the name was used by the media in a negative light, though some residents wonder what effect the name change will actually have on the perception of the community.
