"Perhaps the single most important factor behind successful systems is getting buses out of congested traffic. Increasing bus speeds is critical for improved service that encourages ridership to help raise revenues, which in turn affects the quality and type of bus that can be used. Cities like Curitiba have shown that even car owners will ride the bus if the bus can match their car's speed and reliability."
