Vegetated roofs can help reduce energy consumption, reduce ambient air temperature, and purify the air incities.
"It is no news to anyone taking a walk on a summer afternoon that New York City is nearly 6 degrees F warmer than its surrounding suburbs. This is partly due to the many dark rooftops that absorb and reradiate sunlight. Higher temperatures lead to increased use of air-conditioning, requiring greater energy use and compounding patterns of resource depletion. Green roofs have the potential to lower the ambient air temperature in the city, thereby reducing energy demand for cooling, as well as incidences of heat-stress related illness and even death."
