Seattle's 14-mile monorail measure barely passes. The city will become the first in North America to look to a large-scale monorail to solve its traffic problems.
"With a nod to its past, Seattle will indeed zoom into the future on the monorail -- but the ride could get bumpy. The 14-mile monorail line squeaked by with 50.23 percent of the vote after the last count of ballots yesterday. The decision may not only change the way people get around this city for decades to come, but also it will alter its landscape with pillars and soaring overhead rails... Opponents had predicted the 30-foot-tall pillars supporting the rails would be a blight on downtown, casting the sidewalks below in shadow."
