A few years ago, the mass media latched onto "urban sprawl" as the latest societal menace worthy of attention, and "smart growth" was touted as the cure-all solution that would transform our communities into more livable and sustainable places. Those people who warned that smart growth wasn't the panacea its advocates claimed it was were given short shrift in media coverage of the sprawl issue. Smart growth still dominates public discussions of urban growth and development, but a few recent articles indicate that the concerns of smart growth opponents are being given more weight.
