"The National Park Service is celebrating its centennial in 2016, so that must mean it reaches a glorious 99 years old in 2015," reports Terry Richard. The service's birthday is today, August 25, so admission to national parks is free all over the country.

Richard also reports that the service is already planning a year of celebrations for the upcoming centennial. "The big kickoff event will be release of a large-format movie, narrated by Robert Redford, called 'National Parks Adventure.'"

The NASA website also got in the birthday mood, tweeting a link to a gallery of satellite images of some of the country's national parks, with accompanying text describing what makes each place so special.
