In 1990, the average commute was 25.1 minutes; in 2000 that number increased to 28 minutes. Meanwhile, the number of people commuting to work on public transportation dropped 7.5 percent in the state, with Urbana an exception...Even though Champaign-Urbana's population is fairly stable, its boundaries are constantly increasing, with farmland turning into suburban subdivisions, and large stores on the edge of town replacing older shopping areas.
