Every day, the U.S. Census Bureau offers a factoid culled from the Statistical Abstract of the United States.

The tidbit for July 8: On July 8, 1881, the ice cream sundae was created accidentally in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. That day was a Sunday and the strict Sabbath laws prevented a drugstore owner from filling a customer's order for flavored soda water. He improvised by putting chocolate syrup on top of ice cream in a dish: the first ice cream "Sunday." The Census offers its daily tidbits to whet appetites for the wealth of information listed on the 2001 Statistical Abstract website. Planners will find categories such as population, geography and environment, natural resources, energy, housing, and transportation.
