American houses have been getting larger for decades. Here a family of 4 occupies 8,500 square feet with 6 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. These supersized McMansions seem to concentrate in the high end subarbs of Washington, DC, with 5 of the nations's 10 top big-house neighborhoods. "Washington has highly favorable conditions for monster houses," said Robert E. Lang, director of the Metropolitan Institute of Virginia Tech, in Alexandria, Va., which studies urban development. "It has routine affluence spread across a large upper middle class, and it has a pro-builders environment. There is a version of this sort of monster mansionization going on across the country, but Washington is the peak."
