After three years of operation, Melbourne's publicly subsidized bike share system is for sale. Though ridership has increased each year since opening, private investment is seen as crucial for expansion.
"The state government wants a private company to take over Melbourne's blue bike share scheme from mid-2014 and develop it into an integral part of the public transport network," reports Adam Carey.
"Bicycle Network Victoria's Garry Brennan said Melbourne Bike Share was currently too small and sparse and could not be viable without expansion."
"If a sponsor was prepared to boost the size of the scheme and expand it further through inner Melbourne, it could become a permanent fixture and an important addition to the public transport system," Mr Brennan said.
