Developers Required To Fix Civic Problems

If developers receive public funds, many believe that they should be required to do 'extra' for the local communities.

In the past, the emphasis was on economic development and promoting business expansion. Now, developers are being asked for improved wages, child-care centers, parks and subsidized housing. Those in favor of increased benefits from public subsidies to builders feel that it is payback time. Those opposed to attaching strings to the subsidies believe that by giving community concessions, even more public handouts are needed fund them. And by straining the developers' purses, communities may ultimately drive developers away.
